Natural Hormones

Hormone Organ Chart

Hormone therapy is a topic that has gained much more attention in recent years for treating numerous conditions from fatigue, insomnia and poor memory, to fat reduction, female related symptoms, and depressed libido. In the past we have limited their common uses to birth control, the relief of menopausal symptoms, and bone deterioration with artificial or chemical hormones. In the advent of recent studies we now see the long term use of how these unnatural or synthetic hormones could cost a susceptible person their life.

We are a society that puts great emphasis on youthfulness and beauty. We associate a young person in their peak with optimal levels of sex hormones providing the vigor and stamina they have. Smooth, taught skin, curvy, muscular bodies, thick hair with sheen and luster, lasting energy from day until night, powerful sex drives and fearless motivation are all examples of the hormone bounty expressed by a twenty year old.

Considering that by our mid 30's we are losing hormone levels at about 15% per decade it is well recognized that optimal levels of hormones are associated with youth. (See graph of declining levels with age.) Some have hypothesized that if we were able to maintain the level of hormones we had as twenty year olds we may also be able to maintain the same physical endurance, strength, and function we had at that age.

Hormones taken from horses, like Premarin from "pregnant mare's urine" and other non-human or synthetic sources, have been given negative press in the last decade. Emerging research proves that these non-human hormones can cause severe pathologies including an increased risk of invasive breast cancer, blood clots in the legs and lungs, and a higher risk of heart attack and stroke. 1 Natural hormones are commonly extracted from plants and chemically look and act identical to the human body's own hormones, thus they are called bio-identical. Most artificial hormones are prescribed in pharmacological doses, or very high doses, in order to bring about the desired affect. Natural hormones are prescribed at physiological doses, thus resulting in the same dose as the body would naturally make, raising them to the optimum levels of ones' youth.

Dr. Iverson believes that hormone supplementation is a "hood ornament" or a "fine tuning detail" when it comes to a health plan. A FOUNDATION must first be established through lifestyle changes and improving overall quality of nutrition through diet. It is essential to supply the optimal ingredients for the body to make its own hormones. Sex hormones like testosterone, progesterone, estrogen and adrenal hormones are created from cholesterol as can be seen in the flow-chart diagram. Cholesterol is a very important nutrient found in the diet and made by the liver and not so much the "bad boy" it is made out to be. In fact, too low of cholesterol levels often result in tired, worn out, hormone deficient people. Other hormones like growth hormone, thyroid hormone, vasopression (blood pressure regulator), adrenaline, serotonin and melatonin, and digestive hormones like insulin and glucagon are created from amino acids and peptides. Protein from our diet must be broken down completely into amino acids by a strong digestive system to become the building blocks of these peptide hormones and single amino acid hormones. Proteins becoming amino acids are again another example of Essential Nutrients that if not at proper levels can hinder appropriate hormone function. Detoxification systems of the liver, kidneys, and bowels must also be functioning optimally to assure elimination of elevated hormone levels to balance at optimal levels. After this foundation has been made then further supplementation may be recommended.

Declining levels of hormones may be responsible for physical changes like flab taking the place of muscle, loss of skin elasticity, bone and teeth deterioration, growing fatigue, failing libido, fertility challenges, memory loss, abnormal hair growth or loss, change of sleep patterns, mood swings, edema, temperature changes, appetite changes, immune weakness and the list goes on. When symptoms are identified Dr. Iverson may suggest having either saliva or blood samples taken to identify the hormones that need supported. Treatment will always consist of dietary modification and glandular detoxification with the possible addition of hormonal supplementation. Plant hormone precursors or actual bio-identical hormones will be selected dependent on the situation prescribed at low dose and gradually increased up to the necessary amount to create wellness.
