Vitamin E Grows Hair

Vitamin E is a vital nutrient known mainly for its benefits to heart health. But vitamin E has many other properties that maintain health and has long been used both internally and externally. Vitamin E has been shown to help with the growth of hair as well as preventing hair loss. The exact mechanism is not known but vitamin E may prevent hair loss by the same mechanism that it prevents heart problems. Vitamin E helps with the growth of capillaries. When there are more capillaries, the circulation improves and it is thought that the improved circulation to the scalp is the trigger for preventing hair loss. The additional nutrition can prevent split ends, help heal hair damaged by excessive use of a hair dryer, and cure dry hair as well.

Vitamin E Heals Dry Hair
It is always better to add nutrition to the diet, but for those with very dry hair and scalp, adding a small amount of vitamin E to the hair after shampooing will remedy dry hair. To treat the cause, the vitamins need to be taken internally. To make a healing mask of vitamin E, cut open a number of capsules with a small scissors and blend into the hair. Completely cover the ends of the hair, so it feels oily. Leave on over night with a shower cap and a stocking hat; shampoo the next morning with a natural gentle shampoo.

Daily Recommended Dosage of Vitamin E
The recommended daily dose of vitamin E is 400 IU a day. Doses of vitamin E above 1200 IU may be toxic and doses over 10,000 IU a day taken over time have been shown to cause the loss of hair. The hair will grow back when the overdosing stops.

Natural Sources of Vitamin E
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that is found naturally in vegetable oils, dark leafy greens, liver, eggs, and nuts. To supplement vitamin E, add these foods to your diet or purchase nutritional supplements.

Dr. Iverson's Comment

Healthy hair has long been associated with youthfulness. Patients will commonly seek out our clinic because of falling hair or hair that is dry and brittle. This can be an indication of the overall health of the body. If you have these conditions you should have a full health checkup with a health-minded practitioner to make sure that there are no underlying health issues that are causing a more serious situation.

Since the hair grows from follicles in the head, it is imperative to improve circulation to that area. Improving circulation to the head not only brings more oxygen to the brain it also brings more nutrients to those hair cells. Old time naturopaths would recommend exercise, hydrotherapy with alternating hot and cold water packs to the scalp, oil massages, and even putting the body upside down to bring more circulation to the head.

I commonly will recommend these ideas as well as making sure that the body has enough of the base nutrients that make up hair. Good quality protein at every meal like lean meat from wild game and fish as well as trace minerals from plants like kelp and horsetail herb can be very helpful. If the body is not digesting protein, an enzyme with hydrochloric acid can help the protein be digested and utilized by the body. I also recommend taking extra B vitamins from a whole food vitamin and even a B complex if the hair needs extra support. The hair is high in the mineral sulfur which gives it that strong smell when burned. I will recommend taking organic sulfur from MSM in addition to the recommendations above.

Again, if you have falling, dry, or breaking hair and nails you should see a health-minded practitioner or make an appointment with us at TRILIUM HEALTH to make sure that there are no major health issues before trying any of the suggestions above. We are soon to release a whole food multi-nutrient that will cover all the nutritional needs of the hair and the rest of the body.  It is called Nature’s Nutrition multi-nutrient and you will be informed soon of its release.
