Link Between Successful Weight Loss And Vitamin D Levels
Vitamin D levels can predict weight loss success a new study found.

"Vitamin D deficiency is associated with obesity, but it is not clear if inadequate vitamin D causes obesity or the other way around," said the study's lead author.

In this study, the authors attempted to determine whether baseline vitamin D levels before calorie restriction affect subsequent weight loss. They measured circulating blood levels of vitamin D in 38 overweight men and women before and after the subjects followed a diet plan for 11 weeks consisting of 750 calories a day fewer than their estimated total needs.

On average, subjects had vitamin D levels that many experts would consider to be in the insufficient range. However, the authors found that baseline, or pre-diet, vitamin D levels predicted weight loss in a linear relationship. For every increase of 1 ng/mL in vitamin D, the subjects ended up losing almost a half pound (0.196 kg) more on their calorie-restricted diet.
Additionally, higher baseline vitamin D levels predicted greater loss of abdominal fat.

"Our results suggest the possibility that the addition of vitamin D to a reduced-calorie diet will lead to better weight loss," researchers said.

However, more research is needed. "Our findings need to be followed up by the right kind of controlled clinical trial to determine if there is a role for vitamin D supplementation in helping people lose weight when they attempt to cut back on what they eat."

Dr. Iverson's Comment

There’s a lot to be said about good ole Vitamin D (the sunshine vitamin) in the last several years. We must be careful not to become too narrowly focused and think that popping a vitamin D pill will cure all that ails us. Nor should we think that taking vitamin D will counter balance any of the not-so-good foods and drinks we consume.  We are not a big Vitamin D with legs—we are hundreds of thousands of chemicals mixing together to form complex reactions. It is just that vitamin D is a key player in those thousands of reactions that are occurring.
Isn’t it also interesting how we have been told to avoid the sun for all these years and now we are showing up with the very deficiencies caused because we’ve been hiding from that “evil star” in the sky?
Again, we can’t improve on Nature. Follow Nature’s Path. Get sunshine but don’t get burned and be sure to get the antioxidants by ingesting high quantities of colored vegetables and low sugar fruits. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and any other colors you can eat. These colors are the pigments the plant makes to protect itself from the sun and when you eat it, it protects you too! If you don’t eat enough of these types of foods consider a supplement that contains many antioxidants in one like our Medicines San Andres brand ‘Herbal-ox’ and our other multi-antioxidant capsules.
If you want to improve your chances of losing weight, come get your vitamin D levels checked. It is important to identify if you need to be supplemented and we can make sure you are on a food program that benefits your chemistry. Every little bit helps when it comes to burning those extra inches.
Be well!
