Drop the Sandwich!
Uncovering the link between kids, cancer and processed deli meats

Processed deli meats make packing a child’s lunch quick and easy, but new recommendations from the U.K.-based World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) suggest that sending Junior off to school with a ham sandwich could have serious long-term health repercussions.

As the start of a new school year approaches, the WCRF has issued a statement urging parents to avoid feeding children processed sandwich meats, as their consumption could lead to cancer later in life. The
American Institute of Cancer Research (AICR) also urges that adults and children alike avoid processed meats, citing research that suggests that the risk of colorectal cancer starts to increase with any portion.

According to the WCRF, scientists estimate about 3,700 bowel cancer cases could be prevented if everyone ate less than 2.5 ounces of processed meat a week, which is roughly the equivalent of three slices of bacon.

This study piggybacks another done several years ago that found that chemicals added to processed meat (sodium nitrite and others) were responsible for a 67% increased risk in pancreatic cancer. This study was led by Dr. Ute Nothlings and was announced at the annual gathering of the American Association for Cancer Research.

"We've known for years that sodium nitrite consumption leads to leukemia in children and brain tumors in infants," "Now we have a large-scale study of nearly 200,000 people that provides solid evidence of the link between processed meats and pancreatic cancer."

The evidence of a cancer link is compelling enough that it makes sense for parents to look for healthier lunchbox alternatives, as many of the eating habits we develop as children stay with us into adulthood.

Instead of filling kids’ sandwiches with processed meats, parents could give kids healthier alternatives, such as poultry or fish, low-fat cheese, hummus, or small amounts of lean meat.

Dr. Iverson's Comment

So here it is! You want to see what it is you are eating when you consume lunch meats and hot dogs? The following are ingredients straight from the Oscar Mayer website. As you can see it contains quite a bit more than just meat.

Ingredients: MECHANICALLY SEPARATED CHICKEN, PORK, WATER, CORN SYRUP, CONTAINS LESS THAN 2% OF SALT, SODIUM LACTATE, FLAVOR, SODIUM PHOSPHATES, AUTOLYZED YEAST, SODIUM DIACETATE, SODIUM ERYTHORBATE (MADE FROM SUGAR), SODIUM NITRITE, DEXTROSE, EXTRACTIVES OF PAPRIKA, POTASSIUM PHOSPHATE, SUGAR, POTASSIUM CHLORIDE.

The other sodium derivatives (lactate, phosphate, diacetate, erythrobate) are all other forms of preservatives and have not been cleared in their cancer causing abilities. Sodium nitrite is known to cause carcinogenic compounds called nitrosamines when exposed to heat. Then you have “autolyzed yeast” which is a nice name for MSG (monosodium glutamate) and “flavor” which could be dozens of chemical combinations. These are added to enhance flavor of the meat to make it more favorable and hence more addictive.

These meats are not natural, they are not healthy, and they are not recommended for human OR pet consumption! Start out this school year and turn a new leaf by getting these foods out of your family’s diet. Choose home cooked, organic or free-range meats to use in your sandwiches instead.

Be well!
