In Pain? Stop and Smell the Roses
How roses can protect and possibly rebuild joint tissue for those suffering from arthritis
Although you may think that this is just a fancy way of saying take some time to enjoy life, perhaps we have dismissed roses for too long. Those roses, or actually the fruit of those roses as found in rose hips, could actually greatly improve your life.  That is, if you are one of the millions of people in the US who suffer from arthritis diseases such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Results from two different arthritis studies have confirmed that an active ingredient of rose hips, a protein called GOPO(R), has been shown to protect and rebuild joint tissue broken down by arthritis. This extract, has also been shown to improve mood, increase energy and improve sleep quality of those affected by arthritis.
There is no clear cause for arthritis although a number of risk factors have been identified including genetics, obesity and age. These conditions worsen over time as there is no cure for arthritis. Treatment includes either steroidal or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and/or pain killers and can be daunting for one who doesn’t wish to resign themselves to a lifetime regimen of Advil and Vicoden. Alternatives such as rose hips may prove to be a better solution for joint swelling and pain without the side effects of large doses of pain killers, steroids or other anti-inflammatory medications.
The study found that GOPO(R) deactivated genes that triggered joint destruction to an inflammation reaction by the body. It was also seen to switch on genes which help produce collagen and cartilage, which is a key to joint repair. This study also saw that rose hip powder was able to inhibit the production of inflammatory mediators such as nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2).
Researcher and investigator Dr. Kaj Winther, believes that rose hips may hold the key to a natural anti-inflammatory agent. "We have little doubt that certain rose hip preparations, and GOPO(R) in particular, have had an important role to play in reducing the pain and disability associated with some joint conditions," said Winther, “We...suspect that more people will be turning to the power of rose-hips for joint pain relief," said Winther.

Dr. Iverson's Comment
“O my love is like a red, red rose”, Shakespeare had it right, and Nature always has it right.
Roses, which if left on the plant will mature into the fruit called a rose hip. Some of you may have tasted the rose hip fruit with its characteristic sour yet aromatic flavor. These fruits have been held in high esteem for their wound healing, tissue regeneration, and immune stimulating properties for thousands of years.
Interestingly, science has thought it was due to the properties of Vitamin C and the multiple bioflavonoids found in Rose hips. Both of these are found to be necessary in the production of collagen in the body which is essential for tissue repair.
Since science has identified that the vitamin C and bioflavonoids in rosehips were the active ingredients, laboratories have artificially manufactured these chemicals trying to mimic the powerful effects of Nature. Now, though, another powerful molecule has been discovered, this time GOPO(R), and who knows how many other powerful life sustaining miracle chemicals are found in the rose hip that hasn’t been discovered yet?
Leave it to humans to seek out the one or two active components of a plant so it can be reproduced in a lab, labeled as a drug, and sold to you for big bucks and often with side effects. We think our man-made chemicals out performs Nature’s delivery method which has it already for us, ready to eat in perfect packages. The amounts and ratios of chemicals in plants are already in perfect balance, which work synergistically to bring health to our bodies.
This article validates once again, “You can’t improve on Nature,” and “the whole is better than the sum of its parts.”
