Chronic Pain May Depend on Emotional Reaction to Injury
Whether a person's injury will lead to chronic pain may depend on the level of communication between two parts of their brain, a new study finds.
According to the report, published in the current issue of Nature Neuroscience, brain regions related to emotional and motivational behavior seem to communicate more in those who develop chronic pain.
For the study, the researchers used brain scans to examine interaction between two parts of the brain -- the frontal cortex and the nucleus accumbens. The findings suggest that the brain's emotional reaction to the injury is crucial.
Although the study showed an association between levels of communication in the brain and chronic pain, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

Dr. Iverson's Comment

This is a very powerful affirmation validating so much of the treatment that is focused upon at our clinic. I am so thankful to have come across the work of Dr. John Sarno in the mid-90s. About that time I watched an episode of 20/20 where they interviewed this “wacky” MD that treated pain without medicine, surgery, or any alternative method—just a one weekend seminar. Shockingly, his success rate was upwards of 85%! I have been a faithful student of Dr. Sarno since I have witnessed countless “miracles” in my own practice patients with conditions that have been considered hopeless by the convention. I plan on sharing these stories in other books I am writing on just this subject of the mind-body interaction.

Besides chronic neck, back, and other muscular and joint pains, the brain can be responsible for less recognized symptoms such as headaches, stomach aches, chest pains, and skin breakouts— including acne, hives, herpes, and eczema/psoriasis as well as insomnia, anxiety, and even asthma and allergy symptoms. The brain is a powerful master control center and has a much stronger ability to create or dissolve symptoms on command.

Please make an appointment if you know someone that has these symptoms that is not having success with other avenues.
