A comment from Dr. Iverson about this month’s articles
December 2011
It’s that season again when the earth goes cold and quiet and the sun goes behind the clouds for the majority of the time—not to say it wasn’t doing that all this last summer too! J Well with such a loss of sunlight the people of the Northwest can really benefit from some added Vitamin D.
You and vitamin D: How much should you take and why?
As mentioned in the two articles, fair individuals tend not to get enough vitamin D because they burn before they are able. On the same perspective, dark skinned individuals are not able to get enough because the darker pigments shield them from the little sun that we do have here. Of course vitamin D is essential for thousands of functions especially balancing hormones, making strong bones, balancing mood, improving immunity against viruses and cancer and now showing to prevent against developing type 2 diabetes!
It is absolutely essential that your vitamin D is D3 and not D2. Vitamin D3 is the form that is naturally found in your body when the sun converts it in your skin. However, vitamin D2 is not found in nature and is commonly the version medical doctors will prescribe from the pharmacy. Choose to take about 5000 IU/daily to cover an individual with just basic needs. However, if you do show up deficient on blood labs (less than 40 ng/mL) you will want to boost up with about 10,000 units per day for a couple months before returning to 5000 IU/daily.
I would also recommend those of you who have SAD (seasonal affective disorder), i.e. the blues from the blah of the winter darkness, to check out the variety of mood lights available. The best I could find at the price was at Costco. Give them a try! Nice thing about Costco is that you can take it back if it doesn’t benefit. Use these to extend your day by having them shine early in the morning and later in the afternoon, and even in the middle of a dark day. Any way for the brain to perceive more light is important in activating happy hormones.
Winter time air quality and your health
I also appreciated the article indicating the connection between air quality and the association with depression, anxiety, and attention deficit and memory disorders. Of course long term pollution has been linked to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. In the winter time it is quite important to make sure your indoor air quality is as pure as possible since we spend more time inside. I recommend the 6 stage air purifier from Surround Air that we use here at TRILIUM. CLICK HERE to learn more about these great purifiers.
I still have not found a purifier on the market that can compete with this price for the functionality.   For the Christmas holiday we are offering them at a clinic only price of $169!! Regular $229 plus tax, you won’t find a price anywhere that compares to that!
Besides air purification with the purifier, we also clean the air with an essential oil diffuser. We recommend only using 100% natural essential oils to act against airborne viruses and other microorganisms. We use Herbal Breeze here in the clinic. We receive many compliments as to how clean and fresh it smells and it equally acts to keep us protected from germs.
There you are! Keep yourself filled with sunshine, fresh air, and warmth as you start a New Year. Thank you for your continued support of natural medicine and our clinic~
Many blessings to your family from ours,
Andrew Iverson ND
