Officials Say Kids Getting Too Much Fluoride

The federal government is proposing to restrict levels of fluoride in drinking water because of the concern over a condition called fluorosis which can produce white lines or spots on teeth. A recent federal study found that 40 percent of adolescents have this condition. Fluorosis is on the upswing because children are getting fluoride from drinking water and toothpaste and dental treatments.
Chlorine and fluorine are closely related chemical elements. They're also both added to public water supplies but for different reasons. Chlorine kills germs, fluoride prevents cavities. And now there's a move on to reduce the amount of both of them in our water.
Nearly five years ago, the National Academy of Sciences suggested that the federal government review its fluoride guidelines. Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said okay, a process will take at least another two years. That new target is the number that used to be at the bottom end of the current range. That is 0.7 milligrams per liter.
Still, there are always people who object to having any fluoride added to the water supply. In response to them, Dr. Koh says simply that the public health benefits of fluoridation are proven, and the new recommendations should help reduce the incidence of the cosmetic side-effect of tooth discoloration.
And at home, parents can make sure their kids swallow less fluoridated toothpaste.

Dr. Iverson's Comment
When I heard this on the radio I thought I was mistaking the message. I was impressed to hear that our government was taking a stance against a chemical that has brought steady opposition since its introduction. Fluoride is a hardener but it can also make bones hard to the point of brittle. This is the concern behind fluorosis; it can damage bones and joints and teeth. Flouride is a very toxic chemical and can be damaging to nerves and deadly if ingested in small amounts.
I recommend a filter that will not only purify your drinking water of chlorine but also fluoride. I suggest the filters offered by Aqualiv that have a fluoride removal option (http://incleanhealth.com/water-filters). This company kindly offers a 5% discount to our patients. When ordering let them know you read about it through TRILIUM HEALTH or enter “trilium” as your discount code when checking out. These filters not only remove pollutants but also erase former memories in the water making the water both purified and energized, just as found in Nature.
We are exposed to fluoride from more sources than just water. It is important to switch your oral hygiene products to natural brands that use no added fluoride. I would not recommend the use of fluoride rinses for a child that is on Nature’s Diet. Children with poor dietary habits that utilize fluoride to strengthen teeth are acquiring a false sense of tooth health. Teeth are made of dozens of minerals to build strength, not just calcium and fluoride. Healthy teeth are a reflection of the health of the body.
Be well!
